Workshops 2024

All Things Akua: Individual Tech Sessions

Mixit Print Studio, Somerville MA
July 29 – August 2, 2024

As scheduled directly with Catherine or on other days all year.

Working one-on-one, attention is focused on exactly what you want to learn for your particular project and way of working. The sessions include lots of printing, critique, and technical information all of which feed directly into aesthetic sensibilities. Equivalent in contact hours to a five-day workshop, but in a much more concentrated way, this way of working has proven highly satisfactory and very inspiring.

Scheduling is done on an individual basis, so please contact Catherine.

Modifying the viscosities of inks and then exploiting their interactions yields results that cannot be achieved any other way. Rather than layering each color on a separate plate, the inks are layered on one plate with varying viscosities that either attract or repel each other. This allows the development of multi-color prints from a single run through the press, and naturally leads to sequences of related images.

This three-day (Thursday afternoon – Sunday noon) intensive workshop will introduce and deepen your understanding of how to mix, modify, and use Akua intaglio inks to their full potential for viscosity work. Taking advantage of the ink interactions allows the development of multi-color prints from a single plate, and naturally leads to sequences of related images.

The approach will be very individualized. Some experience is recommended. The number is limited to four participants to allow for focused individual attention and the use of large rollers.

Testimonials

Catherine has been an amazing teacher, and not just about the techniques and technical aspects of printmaking. Her comments and guidance about the design and creative process for my work have led me to think about the content and layout of my prints in very unexpected ways. For me, working with Cathy at Mixit is the equivalent of getting an MFA in printmaking.

~Roxanne

~Joanne Simon
I had a wonderful time and learned so much in your workshop! I know I'll use these new techniques regularly in my work.
~Lesley Obrock
Catherine is an excellent, dedicated printmaking instructor with vast experience and knowledge. As a novice printmaker, I spent 10 intensive days working with Catherine at Mixit learning monoprinting techniques and processes and producing work for my current project. Through this experience, I significantly advanced my skill set as a visual artist.
